A basketball game lasts 40 minutes.
Four quarters. Ten-minute stretches. A scoreboard that never stops counting down.
But some championships take a lot longer than 40 minutes. For Albert Moscatel and Jimmy Kieserman, this one took more than 30 years.
They were once the young players in the Open Division, chasing the same dream they found themselves chasing again on Friday afternoon at the 2026 Maccabiah Games. The uniforms changed. The divisions shifted to the Masters 55. Life happened.
The pursuit never did.
Year after year, Maccabiah after Maccabiah, they came close. Just never close enough. Until now.
The Final Push
The gold medal game was everything it promised to be. A gritty, defensive battle where every inch of the hardwood had to be earned. Israel Lavan never backed down. The game stayed within reach for three quarters, each possession carrying a little more weight, a little more pressure, than the last.
Then, in the fourth quarter, Maccabi USA found another gear. They locked in, spacing the floor and suffocating Israel’s offense. When the final buzzer echoed through the gym, the scoreboard told the story: USA 53, Israel Lavan 43.
They did it in front of the ultimate basketball family. In the stands, the U-19 kids watched the blueprint of how the game is supposed to be played. The Masters 45 guys offered nods of ultimate respect. Scattered through the crowd were the old friends and former teammates—men who remembered exactly how far these two had traveled to get here.
An undefeated tournament. A gold medal. A journey completed.
Two Leaders, One Legacy
Albert Moscatel, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, led with his play—hitting the clutch shots and anchoring the offense when the pressure mounted. Jimmy Kieserman led with everything that can’t be measured in a box score—the grit, the communication, and the veteran leadership that keeps a championship team composed.
They didn’t just win a tournament. They finished what they started more than 30 years ago.
Forty minutes for a game. Thirty years for a legacy.
Gold.
