Philadelphia, PA, January 10, 2008 – The Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires concluded last week and the USA Team earned 266 medals: 110 Gold, 86 Silver and 70 Bronze. Certain Sports were dominated by the Americans, particularly Soccer where the Women’s Open, Junior Girls and Open Men’s Teams all earned Gold Medals, joined by many other Team sports such Master Men’s and Junior Boy’s Basketball and Open Women’s Softball.

Competition took place from December 26, 2007 through January 2, 2008 at 10 venues throughout Buenos Aires and its Provinces. Team USA played very hard to be as successful as they were, and in the process had the opportunity to build life-long friendships with fellow team-mates and competitors from countries throughout North, Central and South America, Europe and Australia.

“Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel sent a contingent of close to 500 to the 11th Pan American Maccabi Games, in the Open, Youth, Juniors and Masters categories, joining an estimated 3,000 athletes from more than 20 countries,” said Phyllis Magerman, General Chair of the U.S. 11th Pan American Maccabi Games Organizing Committee, “They had a phenomenal experience at their competitions and in connecting with fellow Jews from throughout the Diaspora.”

Since 1948, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel has sought to enrich the lives of Jewish youth in the United States, Israel and throughout the Diaspora through athletic, cultural and educational programs. The organization is the sponsor of the U.S. Team to the World Maccabiah Games in Israel, the world’s third largest international sporting event. It also sponsors U.S. participation in Maccabi competitions in Pan America, Europe and Australia and supports Jewish youth through the JCC Maccabi Games.
