Philadelphia, PA, May 6 – Shayna Gershman, of Coral Springs, FL will represent the USA at the 13th European Maccabi Games as a member of the Fencing Team.  The University of Florida (UF) Senior competes as a member of the School’s Fencing Club.  She and her teammates won the silver team medal at the 2010 Dallas North American Cup, which has been the highlight of her athletic career to date.

Gershman first got involved with athletics during her Freshman year at UF when she joined the Fencing Club.  She had studied both music and dancing prior to picking up the sword but never felt passionate about either.  Gershman felt immediately challenged by fencing and began practicing daily.  She has found her niche with the sport and has developed many close friendships with her teammates as she has honed her fencing skills.  Gershman feels that representing her country, competing in a sport that she loves, is a dream come true.

She is looking forward to the competition on multiple levels.  One is that she will be able to participate in an international competition and also that she will be able to compete against and make friends with other Jewish athletes from throughout the Diaspora.

“I look forward to a high level of competition and gaining experience and knowledge that I can take back to my team at UF,” Gershman said. “It is exciting to be competing at the European Maccabi Games in Vienna with so many other Jews and to represent the USA while competing in a sport that I love.”
